Unit 7 Post

1. Complete the "Meeting Asciepius" exercise on track #4 of the Dacher CD. Describe your meditative practice(s) for the week and discuss the experience. Explain how mindfulness or meditation has fostered an increase in your psychological or spiritual wellness. How can you continue to apply these practices in your life to foster greater health and wellness?

I enjoyed this meditation, as I have the preceding ones. Sometimes I have a great deal of trouble quieting my mind and really focusing in on what I am supposed to be doing, but this week it felt like a massage for my mind. I didn't want it to end and it really put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. These meditation have been very helpful to me since, like many people, I hadn't really given any time or thought to my spiritual wellness before taking this course. Now it is something that I pay attention to every day and I do feel like I am making at least a little bit of progress. The best way that I can think of the continue to grow in the spirituality and psychological wellbeing is to make a point to practice everyday. Given my schedule I know the only way to do this is to schedule a specific time or times every day and stick to it.

2. Describe the saying: "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself (P.477) How does this apply to the health and wellness professional? Do you have an obligation to your clients to be developing your health psychologically, physically, and spiritually? Why or why not? How can you implement psychological and spiritual growth in your personal life?

This statement is referring to the idea that it is impossible to have anyone really take your word to heart if you do not set an example. As a professional in the healthcare field I know that it is important to set an example of wellness and the best health possible to my future clients. That way they can see me as an example and know that what I am telling them really does work and is true. Otherwise they are likely to take what I say with a grain of salt because it will be clear that I don't believe it myself. Personally, I have to always be careful of what I say and do around my kids because they pick up on everything and remember it. They remember far more of what they see me do than what they hear me say, so I have to always live up to my word in every way possible.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Good Morning Heidi,

It sounds like every bit of progress you're making is definitely a "baby step" in the right direction. I know when I first started trying to clear my mind it certainly wasn't easy but take a really quiet night and some relaxing musica and presto, I'm off to a dreamlike state of relaxation. Wouldn't it be cool if we could just download a virtual reality type program and pull a "Matrix" like state of relaxation?

  2. Heidi,
That is great that you were able to really enjoy and get the benefits from this exercise. It sounds like you are starting to make the small steps needed to reach a bigger benefit for yourself and others in the future. This will something great that you can teach your children instead of what we were taught to always be on the go and leave no time for yourself to enjoy the quiet moments and let the mind rest. What a great thing you can pass on to your children. It is great that you have taken the time to schedule this time for yourself to practice daily. You are right, I too feel the only way to grow psychologically and spiritually is to practice what we have learned daily and allow ourselves to blossom from these small steps into a beautiful flower.
That was a great point that you made about the children they definately learn what they see and live. If we want them to do something then we have to lead by example. That is the same way for people that we come in contact with in our lives we need to lead by example so they will want what you have in your life. Hopefully that will be a more integral person that shows on the inside and outside.

  3. Heidi, that is a very good idea to schedule a specific time of the day to practice the meditation exercises. I know that is something I need to work harder on. I want to do them more often, it's just finding the time and having the discipline to follow through with it, and I'm glad to see you are doing that. Like you said, the best way to continue and grow is to practice everyday. This course has also kind of opened my eyes to the benefits of improving my psychological and spiritual wellness. These aspects of our lives tend to be forgotten at times.

  4. Hello Heidi,
I can agree with you about sitting a particular time out of the day to practice this exercise as well as any other exercise. I believe this is the first step to train the mind and implement these exercises into your daily life. It is important that you can make it a routine. In addition to that I would say yes one must have experience in order to teach or show someone on how to do something right. I believe we all should live by example. Thanks for you post.
